“I need to choose a doctor” – You can get information on the safety records of physicians, and their medical education and translation services, at the “Physician Profile” web-page posted by the NYS Department of Health.
“I need to choose a hospital” – You can get information to help you compare safety and quality in New York State hospitals. View these information resources:
“New York State Hospital Report Card” – by the Niagara Health Quality Coalition, a nonprofit research organization
“Hospital Compare” – by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
“New York State Hospital Profile” – by the NYS Department of Health
“I need to choose a nursing home” – You can get information to help you compare safety and quality in NYS nursing homes at “Nursing Home Compare”– by the federal Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). If you find this difficult to navigate, you can try the New York section of ProPublica’s webpage called Nursing Home Inspect, which helps consumers find CMS reports and provides some summary information. ProPublica’s website allows searches by city, a nursing home’s name, or a key word. The reports are a “snapshot” of conditions at a particular time and they focus on specific problems rather than overall care, so they should be considered together with other information when evaluating a nursing home’s suitability for an individual’s needs.
